A Message from Dean Andrew T. Filak, Jr., MD Dear College of Medicine Alumni:
I would like to offer all of you my sincerest best wishes for a very happy and healthy 2021.
At this time last year, the first COVID-19 cases in the U.S. were being reported and it was not long before our world was rocked by the coronavirus pandemic. By mid-February, our clinicians and researchers quickly became embroiled in the outbreak, first caring for a small number of confirmed cases and then rapidly turning our investigations into various aspects of the virus.
By March 17, our faculty and staff began adjusting to working from home, doing their best to keep up with work while helping with the education of their children. Our clinicians placed themselves on the front lines of the fight against the coronavirus while early on dealing with limited availability of PPE and adjusting to dealing with many of their patients via remote visits.
Our faculty devised new ways of educating our students. Our students adapted to new ways of being educated, all while missing out on the important personal interactions with fellow students and faculty that critically supplement a medical and scientific education. Through it all, students found many ways to help the community, such as delivering food and medicine to the most vulnerable, providing babysitting services to health care staff and serving as contact tracers.
Our research faculty and staff devised ways to keep many of our labs going. Their research investigated myriad aspects of the coronavirus, and continued submitting many successful grant applications bringing in new grant funding at remarkable levels, far exceeding expectations and previous years’ totals.
Everyone has sacrificed throughout the past year to ensure that the college’s missions were achieved, that patients were cared for, that students were taught, that new knowledge was created. Our faculty, students and staff sacrificed at work and at home. They canceled vacations and family events. They missed weddings and funerals. They moved much of their lives into a virtual world. And their families sacrificed with them. Despite this, they accomplished so much, for so many people. For that, I am so proud and so thankful.
Fortunately, there is now hope, with new vaccines … with immense thanks to our faculty and the many volunteers who participated in clinical trials. And there is hope that case numbers will begin falling. Post-pandemic life will be different, but we will get back to many of the activities that we cherish, especially the personal contact that is so important to each one of us.
I thank all of our alumni for likewise serving their patients and communities. You truly have been heroes throughout the year for your extraordinary efforts. You have my endless respect and admiration.
Sincerely, Andrew T.
