National Spotlight Illuminates UC Health

DAMAR HAMLIN CASE ONE OF MANY FOR EXPERTS AT UC MEDICAL CENTER
|
February is American Heart Month, which is fitting as we reflect on recent events that shined a spotlight on UC’s healthcare enterprise. Last month, UC Health and the doctors and caregivers at the UC Medical Center found themselves in the midst of the gripping Damar Hamlin story, providing lifesaving treatment and stewarding the early stages of recovery for the Buffalo Bills player who suffered cardiac arrest during the Jan. 2 Bills-Bengals Monday Night Football game.
The uniquely visible and galvanizing incident exposed the nation to the exceptional healthcare provider we have in UC Health. The UC Health team was equipped to meet the challenge because, unfortunately, the UC Medical Center staff is accustomed to handling such urgent and severe cases. Fortunately, as we saw with Damar’s inspiring recovery, “medical miracles” occur here on a regular basis.
Our doctors are practicing physicians, researchers and teachers in UC’s College of Medicine. That means they’re not only discovering and deploying the latest approaches to medicine (sometimes as the world watches) — they’re also bringing those advancements directly to more than two million patients annually while training the next generation of doctors who will heal patients well into the future. And as more critical cases are rushed to the region’s only Level 1 trauma center, UC Health will continue to receive and care for them in a greatly expanded and more robust Emergency Department as of this fall.
“Next” is being continually redefined across the UC community and, for many, the place that hits closest to home is UC Health. You’re encouraged to join the many Bearcats who gratefully support the specific areas within UC Health that matter most to them, and I hope you join me in taking enormous pride in this indispensable work.
