UC’S NEW PORTMAN CENTER TO FOSTER CIVILITY, DIALOGUE, BIPARTISANSHIP
|
Rob Portman was consistently regarded as one of the most bipartisan and collegial U.S. senators while representing Ohio from 2011 to 2023. When he announced his intention to not seek re-election, he cited as a major reason the increasing partisan gridlock gripping Washington and the nation overall. “I am proud of [my record of bipartisanship],” he said at the time, “and I will continue to reach out to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to find common ground.”
True to his word, Portman has worked with the University of Cincinnati at its School of Public and International Affairs, housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, to establish The Portman Center for Policy Solutions. The Center will provide student scholarships, internships, co-ops and research opportunities while exploring bipartisan policy solutions and developing future leaders across academic disciplines and the political spectrum. Actively involved in the fundraising that will endow the Center, Portman is also donating papers from the U.S. House and Senate that may be used by Portman Fellows in pursuit of the Center’s ideals. Support the Portman Center.
When we talk about UC being the home of real-life educational experiences that impact the world we all share, the Portman Center is just the latest. UC’s motto, Juncta Juvant, essentially translates to “Strength in Unity,” and this newest addition to the university community shows that we continue to take our motto to heart. In recognizing and innovatively answering the need to cultivate the understanding, civility and common ground to which Portman has long dedicated himself, UC has found yet another way to explore and define Next.
