UC Opens Enhanced Emergency Department

EXPANDED FACILITIES CREATE GREATER OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPERT TRAUMA CARE
|
As NFL teams go through their training camps in preparation for the 2023 season, among those vying for playing time in the Buffalo Bills’ defensive backfield is Damar Hamlin. Cleared by doctors this spring to resume his football career, Hamlin remains a heartwarming, evolving success story. Meanwhile, the cardiac arrest he suffered during the Jan. 2 game against the Bengals, and the care he received in its immediate aftermath, continue to shine a spotlight on the phenomenal emergency medicine team at the UC Medical Center.
While the circumstances created the most public profile of any case handled by UC’s Emergency Department, our doctors have been performing “routine miracles” for a very long time — and their ability to keep doing so just significantly elevated. The region’s only adult Level I trauma center, our newly expanded and enhanced Emergency Department began receiving patients in July. Thanks in large part to the many alumni, friends and grateful patients who support the department, that means more sick and injured can be treated, more lives will be saved, and more hope restored.
At a university known for its innovation and leadership across many fields, UC Health’s emergency medicine program and Emergency Department are nationally renowned for what they do and, as importantly, how they do it. These short, touching “Dear UC Health” videos express the community’s gratitude for the staff’s expert care far better than I can. And during a recent visit to the UC campus, Damar Hamlin perhaps said it best: “I told them they treated me like family. I didn’t feel like a patient that was going through a life-or-death situation. I felt like a family member. It was all genuine love, genuine care.”
